If you want to have a car dealership as a business, you will need to know how to go about obtaining a license to buy and sell cars and other vehicles in order to operate legally. It doesn't matter if you plan to sell used cars, classic vehicles, motorcycles, pickup trucks or another type of vehicle, you'll need to obtain your dealer license from the state in which you will be doing business.

The laws and the exact steps to be taken for obtaining a license to buy and sell cars and other vehicles vary from state to state. However, every state in the United States requires that people that buy and sell vehicles as a business must have a dealer license. In order to give you a good idea of what is involved and what the various types of licenses are, let's use Michigan as an example. Remember, however, that is you are going to need a dealer license to do business you will need to learn what the specifics of your state are and how to apply for a license.

In Michigan, our example state, anyone that buys, sells, leases, brokers, negotiates deals that result in the transfer of title of five or more vehicles in a 12 month period needs to have a dealer license. If you have a business location where you perform this type of business, regardless of how many vehicles are bought and sold, you must be licensed. Depending on exactly what you do in your business, you may need to be licensed in more than one deal license class.

In Michigan as in many other states, the Class A dealer license is obtained by those people that wish to sell new vehicles as a franchise dealer with a contract with a vehicle manufacturer or more than one manufacturers to accept delivery and sale the cars, pickup trucks and other vehicles. Class B dealer licenses give the dealer the right to buy and sell used vehicles. A Class C dealer license makes it legal for a person to buy and sell used vehicle parts. The holders of Class C licenses can purchase wholesale parts and resell them to customers at retail prices. These holders of Class C dealer licenses can also purchase whole vehicles and remove parts for resale, salvaging the remainder of the vehicle and selling it as scrap metal.

A Class D dealer license is held by people in Michigan and many other states that wish to broker auto deals for compensation. A vehicle broker simply brings a buyer and seller together and helps negotiate the price and terms of the deal. A broker can also display a vehicle for sale. The holder of Class D dealer licenses do not have to have the title or ownership of the vehicles or parts that they broker. A person that owns and operates an automobile auction is an example of one type of broker of vehicles.

There are other types of dealer licenses for people involved in the buying and selling of vehicles as a business. However, these are the main types that you many need to know how to go about obtaining a license to buy and sell cars and other vehicles as part or all of a business venture. Check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles to learn the laws in your state.
