Buying Or Selling A Used Car - Tips For Women

Buying or selling a used car is something that everyone does, usually more than a few times in their lifetime. Men do it all the time; so do women. But females and buying or selling a car provides different challenges than when a man is doing the buying or selling. While sexual equality is supposed to prevail in any business transaction, too often there is a noticeable difference in how women are treated by anyone selling them a vehicle or anyone buying a vehicle from them. Is this fair? Of course it is not fair, but it nonetheless happens every day.

Sometimes a female comes into a used car dealer to purchase a vehicle for their own use or for the use of the entire family. She sees a vehicle that looks interesting and spots a sales person - usually this sales person happens to be male because women car sales people usually are less likely to allow sexual stereotyping to invade the sales lot. The woman looking for a used vehicle to purchase then asks the salesman about what size engine the car or truck happens to have under the hood. Sometimes the salesman will ignore the question and begin pointing out the makeup mirror on the back of the sun visor. The lady becomes insulted and leaves the dealership without making a purchase and a sale is lost.

Why is it that so many people are shocked that females buying or selling a car can be knowledgeable and mechanically inclined? It seems to never cross the mind of too many people that a woman can actually be a mechanic and planning to restore the used vehicle all on her own with little or no help from anyone else, including any men. This costs many used car dealerships many sales each year. Obviously, the owners of these used car lots do not realize their sales staff is insulting women in this way or they would stop the problem immediately.

Females buying or selling a used car are no different than men doing the same thing. Some men know nothing about a car except how to put gas into the gas tank. The same is true of many women. Other men - and women alike - know the intricate workings of the most complex engines and drive trains.

This means that anyone attempting to buy from or sell to a woman should take into account the fact that the lady is probably not going to allow the wool to be pulled over her eyes. She is probably not going to sell the used car at a ridiculously low price, no matter what rationale is given to justify the lowered price. The female buying a car is no more likely to purchase a car based on only how it looks than is any man.

People are people and used car are transportation. A woman looking for a previously owned vehicle may know more about that vehicle than the person selling it. A female buying or selling a used car should be treated as just another person that is buying or selling a vehicle. Don't let sexual stereotypes get in the way of doing sound business with every person you encounter.
